Hil St Soul began her career by unveiling her critically acclaimed album Soul Organic, which featured a cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Until you Come Back to me” which has been playlisted on Jazz FM and Soul and Smooth Jazz Radio Stations all over the world for over 17 years. This was followed in 2002 with “Copasetik & Cool” which included her hit version of The Isley Brothers evergreen classic “For the Love of You“. Her last album “Black Rose” featured the Neo-Soul anthem “Smile” which has had over half a million plays on YouTube.
Fast forward to 2017, Hil St Soul has unveiled her acoustic rendition of ‘’ The Sweetest Pain”, which was popularised by Dexter Wansel (he famously contributed to the development of the Philly Sound and worked with producers Gamble and Huff at Philadelphia International Records. )
Hil St Soul does not disappoint with her stripped back rendition and does well to ride the rhythm so effortlessly. Her vocals are just lush and have me pressing the replay button again and again. This is definitely a record that I will be adding to my playlist and I am sure you will all be doing the same.
I managed to briefly chat with Hil St Soul and find out what is on the horizon for her music career.
Hi, How are you?
I’m good thanks
What inspired you to do your own rendition of Dexter Wansel’s classic hit record ” The Sweetest Pain”?
Apart from the fact that I love this song because it’s got such an uplifting summery vibe I thought it would be fun to do an acoustic stripped down take on it.
How did your show at Jazz cafe go?
My gig at the Jazz cafe was epic! The last time I performed there was 2009 before it was newly refurbished so it wonderful to be back there again and connecting with my Hil St Souljas once more. It felt like a homecoming.
What have you got planned for this year?
Apart from establishing my own label AFROFIVA MUSIC, I plan on doing more gigs up and down the country and abroad
Is there any new music in the works?
Yes, there is. Apart from recording a new Hil St Soul EP/Album, I’m also featured on another project called DIVAS GOT SOUL by producer TOM GLIDE. I’m also working on a collaborative album with upcoming singer-songwriter FIDEL who has written a few songs on my previous albums. In all this year is about releasing new music.
Any new gigs coming up?
I’m performing at the hideaway in Streatham on 1st & 2nd September. Tickets are available at from the hideaway website www.HIDEAWAY.com
What advice would you have for young musicians trying to breakthrough into the music industry?
Be patient and true to yourself, follow your heart and surround yourself with the right team/tribe of people that share the same vision as you. As the saying goes teamwork makes the dream work.
