Interview | Five Minutes with versatile vocalist Kit Rice

A BRIT School Graduate from South East London, he is a truly versatile musician and with four years of BRIT school experience to call on, Kit loves nothing more than performing live, and can often be seen playing solo shows, with his unique singing style and flexible musicianship, he is an emerging talent to be watchful of in the near future. Kit broke down the meaning of soul , Prince and his new record label he started.

How are you ?

I’m great Thank you

What does funk / soul mean to you ?

Funk & soul are such a big part of my life! Prince! Anita Baker! Mary J Blidge! Luther Vandross!

Were you musically trained ?

I am, as a kid I trained in Classical Violin, Piano & Choral Singing. I grew up with Musical Theatre & also trained in that. At BRIT school I trained in Pop music.

What instruments do you play ?

I play Violin, Piano, Vocals, Production & I also Dj 😛

What was the seminal track that made you want to perform as a career ?How did you feel at that moment ?

I’ve always been a performer and since 4 years old I have been involved in music! The track that made me the man I am today is Purple Rain. I went to see Prince in 2006 and he looked at me as he sang the second chorus and my life changed forever.

What did Prince mean to you ?

Oh gosh I can’t. Prince meant everything to me. I’m so sad I never got to meet him to thank him. The loss of the greatest artist of all time. My Idol, my guide, my shrink.. I can’t even.. Here are some prince lyrics..

Hurricane Annie ripped the ceiling of a church and killed everyone inside. You turn on the telly and every other story is tellin’ you somebody died. It’s silly, no?  When a rocket ship explodes and everybody still wants to fly. But some say a man ain’t happy unless a man truly dies .Oh why?

What are you currently working on at the moment ?

My new EP Living Life is out on June 17th! Pre orders are up now! I’m always writing and producing new material! I have so much to show the world & I won’t stop until I’m done!

What made you start your own record label ?

I started KARR because I never found a label or management that worked for me! It’s worked so well being my own Boss & I recommend to any new artist coming up! DO IT YOURSELF

What have been some of the pros and cons of starting such a venture ?

The Pro is you’re in control, the Con is you’re in control.

List the tracks that make you feel inspired to change the world ?

Princes album. Sign O The Times

Do you feel that soul music will ever re-emerge into a global force like it did in the 60’s , 70’s & 80’s ?

Definitely, great music has always been there.
